WRITING WITHOUT NERVES: ONLINE TOYS FOR WRITERS

Come discuss in the FB group Autoři CZ + SK

Magical concealers (aka reputation saviors)

  • Opravidlo.cz – a Czech superhero who will find typos, bad commas and typographical sins in your text.

  • LanguageTool – an international wizard who can speak more languages than a polyglot at an Erasmus party.

  • Scribens – another spell checker who likes to be friends with Google Docs and Word.

  • Linguella online text analyzer – when you need to find out if any words in your text are repeated to the point of being stupid.

Mind maps and mental chaos under control

  • Mindly – if you have more characters in your head than in Game of Thrones, this is where you can draw them nicely.

  • Notion / Evernote – digital notebooks where you can hide ideas, research and a list of your favorite cafes.

  • Scrivener – a professional book writing tool that allows you to cut a novel into chapters and then put them back together like LEGO.

Map generators: so those heroes don't get lost

Every fantasy writer knows that moment: your characters set off on a journey and you realize you have no idea where they’re going. This is where map generators come in – your cartographic wizards.

  • Inkarnate – the absolute ruler of the map kingdom. It offers thousands of icons, textures and the ability to export in deluxe resolution. Your continent will look so good that even Gandalf would want to move there.

  • Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Generator – an open-source wizard that will generate your entire world in a few clicks. Perfect when you need to quickly find out where your kingdom is and who your dragons are neighbors with.

  • Worldographer – a detailed artist of regions, cities and hex maps. Great for those who want to have every forest and village under control.

  • Dungeon Painter – a specialist in the underground. If you like dungeons full of traps and treasures, this is the tool for you.

👉 Maps are not just a picture – they make you think about the climate, roads, and logic of the world. And most importantly: your heroes will never get lost in the fog of your imagination again.

Online generators

  • Dragon Watch – an online story generator when you’re out of ideas and need a nudge

  • Storyteller – a simple generator by René Nekuda (the first one I came across)

  • Fantasy Names Generator – a practically inexhaustible source of names, city names, countries, creatures, etc. etc.

And once again:

  • Linguella – an online generator of names, cities, characters and plots.

AI friends (no, they won't write the book for you... yet)

  • Claude, Copilot, Gemini and ChatGPT – super handy chatters that will help you hone your style.

  • Grammarly – more for English, but can tell you if your text sounds like Shakespeare or a microwave instruction manual.

Publication

  • Online – convert – a useful online tool that allows you to convert text to EPUB if, like me, you want to enjoy the sight of an almost finished book

  • FlipHTML5 – another cool converter to EPUB

  • Pointa.cz – a Czech platform where you can publish a book even if you are not suitable for traditional publishing houses.

  • Bookla – another publishing house that allows you to self-publish books.

Final Thoughts

I hope this list of tools for writers has helped you at least a little – and maybe inspired you to try something new. I use some of them myself really intensively and without them my writing would look completely different.

My biggest support is Opravidlo.cz, which is incredibly sophisticated and stands on solid academic foundations. It is run by the Masaryk University Natural Language Processing Center, and the project was supported by experts from the Institute of Czech Language of the Faculty of Arts of MU, the Institute of Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Linguistics of Charles University. Thanks to this, it acts as a language guardian that I trust one hundred percent.

Then there is Inkarnate, to which I have almost an emotional attachment – without it I could no longer imagine writing in a fantasy world. The maps that are created in it give my stories a concrete face and help me keep continents and villages together.

And finally, I can’t forget about the Fantasy Name Generator – for me, it’s an endless well of names that can add personality to characters and places. Its scope is so wide that it’s suitable not only for fantasy, but also for sci-fi or historical stories.

Every writer has their favorite helpers. Mine are these three – and you might even find your new sidekick among them, who will make your journey to the story easier.
